Homekitchenmagazine.com – The DIY pendant light is the newest project you should get your hands on. All you need is a DIY pendant light kit and some materials lying in your house. With those, you can already have a beautiful and unique lamp to decorate your home. Here is how to do it.
What Is a DIY Pendant Light?
A pendant light is also known as a drop or a suspender. It consists of a single light fixture that is suspended from the ceiling. Pendant lights usually have a shade to reduce the glare of the light bulb and add to its aesthetic appeal.
Pendant light shades are made from various materials, ranging from glass, metal, plastic, to paper. Different materials will create a different ambiance and style. The shapes also vary depending on the style of the interior design. You can also DIY your own shade at home.
How to Set Up a DIY Pendant Light?

It’s quite easy to install a pendant light. There are various affordable choices of DIY pendant light kit available at offline and the online hardware stores that you can decorate with your customized shade. Here is how to install your own DIY pendant light.
1# Ensure Safety
Before starting check that the power is turned off at your main circuit box. This is to prevent possible electrocution. To ensure that the switch doesn’t get turned back on when you are installing your DIY pendant light wiring, cover it with a tape. To double-check, use a circuit tester to make sure that the power is really off.
2# Choose a Fixture
For a DIY light project, you can choose the style of fixture and shade that you want. Choose the design, color, and size that best fit the ambiance and style you want to create in the room. The shade is the main point of attraction of your pendant light.
The shape of the shade also controls the amount of light in the room. If you want to increase the amount of light spread in the room, use a flared shape or a transparent shade. On the other hand, a solid shade would focus the light on a certain surface. You may want to use the latter style to direct light on the door or the dinner table, for example.
3# Install Mounting Bracket
Turn off power to the junction box on your electrical panel. If there is any light that you want to remove, do it carefully to avoid damaging the wiring. You should see three wires. Two wires for power, and one for an electrical ground.
If there is any previously used mounting bracket, remove it as well. Using a screwdriver, install the new mounting bracket of your DIY pendant light kit to the junction box. Check that the junction box and the bracket are sturdily attached.
4# Adjust Pendant Light Height
Adjust the height for hanging your pendant light by pulling the cord to the length you want. When considering the height, keep in mind the amount of light that you want in the room.
5# Install the Wiring
Attach the grounding wire to the mounting bracket and set the power wires together according to the instructions given in the DIY kit. To secure the wire ends, twist the bare ends together and cover using wire nuts. Then, cover the junction box. Leave no wire exposed.
6# Install the Shade and the Bulb
Slide the shade over the threads and secure with nuts. Ensure that the shade is stable and hangs level. Then, install the bulb. Follow the DIY kit manufacturer’s instructions in choosing the right bulb for your DIY pendant light.
